Traditional Yoruba Building Pattern: Architectural Expression of Cultural Identity

Abstract
The traditional architecture of the Yoruba people in South-western Nigeria reflects their cultural values, social systems, and worldview. This research explores how cultural identity influences traditional Yoruba building patterns. Utilizing a systematic literature review approach, the research explores key architectural features such as spatial organization, building form, construction materials, decorative motifs, and symbolic elements associated with the Yoruba traditional built environment. It investigates how belief systems, historical practices, and patterns of communal life influence building pattern and spatial relationships. The findings revealed that Yoruba traditional buildings are more than functional dwellings, they convey messages about hierarchy, spiritualism, community ties, and inherited customs. The study also pointed out that the continued use of indigenous building materials and methods reinforces cultural identity and transmits knowledge across generations. By studying the relationship between traditional building design and cultural identity, the research makes a case for safeguarding Yoruba architectural practices as part of a wider effort to protect cultural heritage and support architectural diversity in Nigeria. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how traditional buildings serve as carriers of cultural expression
